FITASC Selection Shoot Report
Windrush & Westfield FITASC Sporting Selection Shoot & European Cut Off 16 & 17 May 2009 Technical Report
Technical
Windrush and Westfield shooting grounds were the venues for the second GB Team FITASC Sporting selection 2009,110 competitors took part there were 4 'no shows'.
The shoot manager and course designer was Mr Steve Lovatt assisted by Mrs Alison Lovatt.
The competition ran over 6 layouts named (Windrush): Tunnel, Cabin and Top Field; at Westfield: Valley, Wood and Railway Line. Tunnel and Top Field day one were of equal difficulty with Cabin returning two straight 25 scores and one straight on Top Field. Day two Valley and Wood returned similar scores with two 25 straights recorded on the Railway layout.
Day one once again was marred by high gusting winds and squally showers often heavy, this made it at times a lottery for the competitors with the Tunnel layout being the worse affected; this however was not reflected in the day one scores with some extremely competent scoring by all skill levels.
Worthy of note was the effort put in by the grounds staff in preparation of the shooting arenas for this event. All traps were concealed with large mown walk ways to the shooting areas.
Hugh Smith and Nick Woodward assessed the targets on Friday the 16, all targets where of a high standard, visible with varying speeds, distance, colours and angles, it was only necessary to make changes for the predicted weather with additional changes made on Saturday before first shots.
Day two targets were assessed by Hugh Smith with the targets being moderated against the predicted Sunday weather conditions, this moderation appeared to make the day two event easier however, on completion of the event both days returned almost identical results across all skill levels.
It should be noted that the moderation by Hugh and Steve was justified as the first competitors would agree, the weather for the first hour was high gusting winds with torrential rain.
The scores were computed and maintained in a timely manner by Alison there was little delay in displaying the results, at the end of the event there was no requirement for shoot offs.
Competition
The first days results indicated that the competitors skills were under test due to the prevailing weather conditions with Mark Vessy and Roy Cherry both posting 71 and Martin Myers close behind on 70.
Luke Llewellin was lead Junior on 67 including a 25 straight with Harry Seal 65 and Phil Grey 64.
In the Ladies Sarah Hamburger took the lead with 57 Pet Easton 53 and Janine Preece 51.
Veterans saw Colin Saich and John Bidwel on 65 with John Dyson 63.
Super Vets had Allen Coy with 66 Paddy Howe 60 and David Payne 58.
With the second day in progress and wind and rain sometimes heavy greeting the earlier starters it looked like it would be miserable all day however, after about an hour the skies brightened and the wind dropped for the next three hours; only to return early afternoon adding another dimension to the targets.
The final results for the Seniors had Roy Cherry and Mark Vessy equal on 141 with Stuart Rudling in third position 139.
Luke Llewellin came through on135 to take the Juniors with Phil Gray 128 and David Bolton 125.
Sarah Hamburger and June Speakman headed the ladies with 116 with Pet Easton 115.
John Dyson and Martin Reynolds 132 won the Veterans with Philip Simpson 131.
Super Vets saw Allen Coy clear on 128 Jerry Bland 123 and Colin Foden and David Payne 121.
The 141 score of Mark and Roy was exceptionally good given the poor weather conditions on both days; the competition ran with only one delay at the end of the event when a trap motor burnt out not surprising really however, this was quickly repaired with the event finishing 40 min late not bad given the poor weather conditions.
Nick Woodward ran another successful fund raising raffle netting approximately £300 FITASC Sporting GB Team for European Championships | TEAM | NAME |
