The Countryman Challenge

Countryman Challenge

The Countryman Challenge event is running on the 1st and 2nd of August at Tower Guns near Wincanton, close to the Wiltshire Somerset border.

With 70 prizes worth £11,000 on offer it is a truly unique sporting event. The combination of 8 one man ten bird flushes and 4 air rifle field target layouts will test the true sporting abilities of the most ardent fieldsports enthusiast all at a very reasonable cost of just £38 for 120 targets.

Even though the combination of disciplines makes it unlikely that the top clay shots will scoop the biggest prizes we have ensured that all those holding a CPSA ranking in A, AA or AAA have to shoot in a separate "Pro" Class for their own prize fund with a clay shooting holiday for two on the Portuguese Algarve as the top prize in class.

In the Open class there are prizes down to tenth including a £1,600 Guerini woodcock shotgun, an Air Arms s510 air rifle, a Promatic Clay Trap, Jack Pyke clothing and other prizes and experiences including Fiocchi cartridges for all the winners*.

In the Junior class (under 16) there is a Winchester Semi auto as 1st prize along with a shooting lesson with Olympic Gold medallist Richard Faulds MBE, BASC membership, Sporting Shooter magazine subscription and more cartridges, other prizes go down to 5th place.

The ladies havent been left out either with a Midland semi auto shotgun going to the winner along with cartridges, a magazine subscription and three hours of shooting lessons with Steve Nutbeam of Longridge shooting ground, the ladies prize fund going to third place.

There is also a parent & child class available.

For those who dont have an air rifle or would like to try something new there will be Air Arms rifles available to use on each stand whilst on the shotgun stands the event will have a unique feel thanks to the ten bird one man 2 or 3 trap flushes controlled by purpose built Morris Electronics flush boxes. The targets will also seek to faithfully replicate the real thing with driven pheasant, walked up snipe and decoyed pigeon to name just three, the latter being shot from within a fully equipped pigeon hide with decoys and rotary's out in front just to add to the realism. Throw in shooting some bolting rabbits from the back of a 4x4 and it should prove to be as close to the real thing as we can get it.

The event can be shot on either the Saturday or Sunday with squads starting at 09.00, 12.00 and 15.00. Alternatively there is a services day on the Friday for those that qualify with a entry fee of £33.

For those wishing to make a weekend of it there is free camping on site and there will be a small trade village, quality catering in the form of Top Game Chef Mark Gilchrist (all at prices that wont hurt your wallet!) Have a go stands on both air rifles and shotguns, the Guerini Pool shoot and the Phoenix Fastfire Running boar simulator. Entries can be made either online via the website www.countrymanchallenge.co.uk or by printing off the entry form attached at the bottom of the page. The website explains the event in detail, down to the local accomodation on offer, directions, the full rules and even the catering menu and price list.

So if you fancy something different, where everyone has a chance of winning and where having fun is the name of the game then come along and give the Countryman Challenge a try!

*To qualify for cartridge prizes shooters must use Fiocchi cartridges which can be purchased in advance with your entry at an all in price of just £53 (100 cartridges and entry fee) All cartridges used at the event must be fibre wadded.

Look forward to seeing you there
