Southdown Shooting Ground was the venue for the first GB Team FITASC Sporting Selection 2010.136 competitors took part there was 1 'no show'.
The shoot manager and course designer was Mr David Peckham assisted by Mr Shaun Peckham.
The competition ran over layouts named Valley, Gorse and Warren with the Valley and Gorse layouts proving to be the most demanding on the first day; the Gorse layout proving to be very demanding on day two partially due to weather conditions deteriorating in the afternoon. .
Day one was marred by rain sometimes heavy in the afternoon. However, there were four (4) 25 straights recorded on Warren by, Sarah Hamburger, Stuart Rudling, Nick Hendrick and Chris Papworth.
There were no recorded straights on day two, the highest recorded score was on the Valley layout with 24 posted by Richard Bunning the highest scores on the other two layouts was 23. The conclusion being that day two was arguably too demanding by one possibly two targets.
Worthy of note was the effort put in by the grounds staff in preparation of the shooting arenas for this event with new positions prepared for day two.
Hugh Smith assessed the targets on Friday the 26th , all targets where of a high standard, visible with varying speeds, distance, colours and angles. It was only necessary to make changes for target sequences on day one and one shooting position on day two, due to unexpected sun making the early rotations disadvantaged. All changes were made before shooting commenced.
The domestic facilities at Southdown were more than adequate with portable WCs positioned on the remote layouts.
The scores were computed and maintained in a timely manner; there was little or no delay in displaying the results, at the end of the event the shoot offs were completed within 45 minutes and the presentations completed within 45 minutes of the last shot.
Competition
The first days results indicated that the competitors skills were under test due to the prevailing weather conditions with Seniors Roy Cherry posting 69 ex 75, Stuart Rudling, Martyn Myers and John Pool (Vet) 68.
J Lovick was the lead Junior on 67 with P Gray 63 and N Batchelor 58.
In the Ladies, Sarah Hamburger took the lead with 65 (25 straight on Warren), Cheryl Hall 65, Pet Easton 59.
Veterans saw John Pool in the lead with 68 closely followed by Phillip Simpson 65, Graham Stirzaker 65 and John Dyson 63.
Super Vets had Jerry Bland 66, Paddy Howe 61 David Payne 61 and Roger Ward 60.
With the second day in progress and the windy conditions blowing away the remnants of an early mist it was immediately obvious that all three courses had been stiffened up.
Stuart Rudling; after a shaky start (by his standards) became the outright winner and English Open Champion posting 132, with an exciting shoot off taking place for second and third Seniors between Nick Hendrick and Richard Bunning the result being Richard 128 + 18 and Nick 128 +17.
Phil Gray took the Juniors 126 with Chris Papworth 123 and J Lovick 120.
Cheryl Hall came through to win Ladies with 119, Sarah Hamburger 116 and Pet Easton 104.
Graham Stirzaker won vets 126 with John Dyson 125 John Pool 125. No shoot off took place as both had left the venue.
Super Vets saw Jerry Bland take the event on 119 with Roger Ward 116 and Allen Coy 112.
The 132 score of the event winner was extremely good given the wet weather conditions on day one and the difficulty of the course on day two; the competition ran with little delay day one and 20 min late day two due to trap failure requiring replacement on the furthest course Sunday afternoon.
The atmosphere on Saturday was good as competitors posted good personal scores over a challenging course in poor weather. However, as day two progressed the challenge had a visible impact on the competitors some finding the new courses just a little too demanding.
Nick Woodward ran another successful fund raising raffle. | Class | Position | Name | Result |
