Technical Report

Newnham Park Shooting Ground at Plymton Devon was the venue for the 2008 British Grande Prix World Cup event it was also the 3rd GB Team FITASC Sporting selection 2008. It was also the final selection event for teams selected to represent GB at the FITASC World Sporting Championships 2008 in Cyprus; 204 competitors took part, there were 3 late withdrawals.

There were a number of overseas competitors including: Estonia, Australia, Lithuania, Estonia, New Zealand, Russia, Cyprus and France.

The shoot manager and course designer was Mr Graham Lapthorn with administration support from Mr David Cobbold the ground owner.

The competition ran over 8 sponsored layouts named, Deer Park, (CCI) Fern Hill, (Blazer) Clubhouse, (Krieghoff) Pipeline, (Perazzi) 100 Acre, (CCI) Moor View (Blazer) Bude, (Krieghoff) and Clearing (Perazzi).

Club House, Pipeline, Deer Park and Fern Hill were day one layouts with Clubhouse being the tougher of the first day's competition. Pipeline had a scaffold platform with targets presented some 60 to 80 feet below the shooting position. Fern Hill was set in predominantly ancient woodland and as suggests fern covered ground; targets were assessed over two days by Chief Referee Hugh Smith and maximum use of the beautiful surroundings was utilised by Graham Lapthorn.

Worthy of note was the effort put in by the grounds staff in preparation of the shooting arenas for this event, where the ground was soft under foot bark Chipping's were utilised and all shooting positions were uncluttered and level under foot and well signed.

Target presentation was as near perfect as could be expected using a selection of target colours for excellent visibility against all types of backgrounds unfortunately, persistent and often heavy rain throughout the whole of day one added another dimension to the first day's competition.

The facilities by Newnham Park for this event are well above average with good use made of the medium sized clubhouse and cafeteria facilities the staff service was excellent; an additional marquee was erected with comfortable seating available.

The scores were computed and maintained in a timely manner by David Cobbold.

There was little or no delay in displaying the results, score cards from the remote shooting positions were returned efficiently and displayed on a large score board in the Marquee.

Competition

The first day's results were unexpectedly high given the atrocious weather conditions, all layouts had at least one 25 straight posted.

Sean Stacey shot an incredible 98, 2 targets clear of Tony Manvill with 96 and John Dyson and Martin Myers 95, with many other competitors in the lower nineties.

Sam Green posting 93 was the lead Junior with Bastion Harvard (FR) 92 and S Chapman 88.

In the Ladies, Inna Aleksandrova (RU) and Cheryl Hall, were separated by only one target 86/85 with Sarah Clay 80.

Veterans had John Dyson 95 Allan Coy 94 and Steve Brightwell 93.

Super Vets saw George Parsons on 87 David Payne and Roger Ward 84.

With the second day in progress and an improved weather forecast 4 new layouts came into operation; Bude, Moor View, 100 Acres and Clearing, the competition was wide open in all categories

The 191 score of the event winner was an exceptionally good score from Sean Stacey, the competition ran 15 min late on day one, starting at 10:00 and finishing at 18:45 due to the weather and a minor trap problem.
There were a number of trap problems on day two, attributable to water ingress from day one resulting in a 30-min delay come the finish.

Due to the combination of concurrent events and team selection, administration of the final results and prize giving was delayed by an hour.

Yet again there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the event that even the poor weather conditions could not dampen. Competitors from outside the UK on their first visit to Newnham found that it was an outstanding venue for FITASC Sporting and it would be an ideal venue for a European Championships in the FITASC Sporting discipline.

Nick Woodward ran another successful fund raising raffle netting just over £300.

The FITASC Sporting Sub-Committee and the competitors for this event are extremely grateful for the sponsorship of the prize fund arranged by Alan Rhone and supplied by Peter Brass of Krieghoff.
